Last week went from what I thought would be another week of solid training with the possibility of racing over the weekend (nothing new, just more work and more time on my feet, on the bike, and in the water) to a whirlwind of emotion and changes. However, things changed rather quickly Tuesday night as my wife and I were finishing up dinner.
I'm not going to go into any details, as most people don't want to know those types of things, but we headed to the hospital after my wife told me she was pretty sure our baby was coming. We got there around 10:15pm, and sure enough, our little one was on the way.
After a long night of labor, my wife and I are extremely proud to announce the birth of our beautiful baby girl, Grey Phelan (fay-lin) at 3:25am. She was born at 7lbs 14oz and was 18.5 inches long.
We spent the next few days in the hospital and got to be with her every hour of the day. I know everyone believes that they have the most beautiful baby in the world, and it's true. I would fight anyone to say they have a prettier baby than I do! But, I know she's ours, and now I know how every new born's parents feel about their own, so I will never tell another parent otherwise if they were to tell me they have the most beautiful boy or girl.
In case you're wondering, she was born ready to swim, bike, and run, but just in case, her parents are open for her to try out any other sports. Especially since she was born right in the middle of the US Olympic trials, the UEFA European Championships, and the beginning of the Tour de France.
We're so happy to have her with us, and we did miss her due date by a few days, but we are fine with that. Her due date was today, July 2, which was my brother Jake's birthday, who passed away last year in a hiking accident in Montana. We truly believe that she is going to be the living embodiment of him, and she brings so much joy to her mom and I in these hard times. And she also has a little cousin from my sister to come into the world with, but just over two weeks ago, Jacob Maverick. We're all so excited to watch these two grow up together, coming to our families during one of the hardest times we'll ever face.
